How it works

How the Petrol Expense Calculator Works

The petrol expense calculator runs three inputs through one formula: distance ÷ mileage × price. The result is the total cost of petrol for the trip in the user's chosen currency. The tool converts every input to a common base unit before applying the math.

Inputs

Three numbers, four units

Enter the trip distance (km or miles), the vehicle's fuel efficiency (km/L, MPG, or L/100 km), and the petrol price (per litre, per US gallon, or per UK gallon). The calculator handles every unit conversion behind the scenes.

Outputs

Five numbers out

Total trip cost, petrol used in litres or gallons, cost per kilometre, cost per mile, and 30-day plus 365-day projections. Per-rider split appears when carpool is enabled.

Defaults

Locale-aware presets

Currency, distance unit, and mileage unit auto-detect from the browser locale. Pakistan defaults to PKR + km/L. The United States defaults to USD + MPG. The Eurozone defaults to EUR + L/100 km. Override any default in the form.

Formula

The Basic Formula & Methodology

The petrol cost formula is: Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ Fuel Efficiency) × Price per Unit. The methodology follows the same standard used by AAA, calculator.net, and the Fuel Cost Calculator at fueleconomy.gov.

Default petrol prices reflect early 2026 national midpoints. Real-world fuel use deviates from the calculated number by typically ±10% — driving conditions, weather, vehicle age, tire pressure, and AC use all affect actual fuel consumption.

Step-by-step

Step-by-Step Calculation Guide

Calculate petrol expense in 5 steps. The calculator above runs this guide for you live, but the manual walkthrough is useful for double-checking with a calculator app or spreadsheet.

  1. 01Step 1

    Measure the distance

Use a GPS route planner like Google Maps or Apple Maps to find the trip distance in kilometres or miles. For irregular routes, sum each leg.

  2. 02Step 2

    Find the vehicle's fuel efficiency

Use the rated mileage from the owner's manual, or compute the actual km/L from two consecutive fill-ups. Real-world mileage runs 10-15% below manufacturer ratings.

  3. 03Step 3

    Check today's petrol price

Use the current pump price or check a regional fuel-price authority. The American Automobile Association (AAA) publishes a daily US national average; OGRA tracks Pakistan; the RAC Foundation tracks the UK.

  4. 04Step 4

    Calculate the fuel needed

Divide the trip distance by the fuel efficiency. Example: 450 km ÷ 30 km/L = 15 litres of petrol. For US users: 280 miles ÷ 35 MPG = 8 US gallons.

  5. 05Step 5

    Calculate the total fuel cost

    Multiply the fuel needed by the petrol price. Example: 15 litres × ₨ 280/L = ₨ 4,200. For US users: 8 gallons × $3.40 = $27.20.

By vehicle

Vehicle-Specific Calculator

Each vehicle profile preloads typical mileage and a sensible default commute. Bigger engines burn more petrol — an eight-cylinder engine consumes 30-40% more fuel than a comparable four-cylinder. Driving a smaller, more fuel efficient vehicle delivers the largest single saving on petrol cost.
