How to Compare Vehicle Fuel Costs
- Enter the distance both vehicles will cover during a trip, week, month, or year.
- Choose km/L or L/100 km and enter each vehicle's observed efficiency.
- Enter the price per litre for each vehicle and label the currency.
- Review litres used, fuel cost, cost per kilometre, the lower-cost vehicle, and the difference.
For a fair comparison, use the same distance and similarly representative mileage data. Different fuel prices are supported, but both price inputs must be per litre.
Formula
Vehicle Fuel Comparison Formula
Litres used = distance ÷ km/L
Litres used = distance × L/100 km ÷ 100
Fuel cost = litres used × price per litre
Cost per km = fuel cost ÷ distance
Cost difference = higher cost − lower cost
Fuel difference = higher litres − lower litres
The calculator retains full precision and rounds only the displayed figures. Higher km/L indicates better efficiency; lower L/100 km indicates better efficiency.
Worked example
Comparing Two Cars Over One Month
Distance: 1,000 km per month. Vehicle A returns 12 km/L; Vehicle B returns 16 km/L. Petrol costs PKR 280 per litre for both.
Vehicle A fuel = 1,000 ÷ 12 = 83.33 L
Vehicle A cost = 83.33 × 280 = PKR 23,333.33
Vehicle B fuel = 1,000 ÷ 16 = 62.5 L
Vehicle B cost = 62.5 × 280 = PKR 17,500
Difference = PKR 5,833.33 per month
At these inputs, Vehicle B has the lower fuel running cost. This does not prove it is cheaper to own because the calculation excludes purchase, finance, servicing, repair, insurance, tax, tyre, and depreciation costs.

Use Real-World Efficiency for a Fair Comparison
Fuel economy, fuel efficiency, mileage, and consumption describe how much distance a vehicle covers for its fuel or how much fuel it uses over a distance. Use averages measured across several tank refills where possible. Compare similar city, highway, mixed-route, payload, passenger, towing, and climate conditions.
Engine size, vehicle weight, aerodynamics, transmission, drivetrain, tyre pressure, congestion, idling, speed, acceleration, braking, roof racks, cargo, air conditioning, maintenance, and road gradient can change real consumption. If two vehicles serve different duties, calculate representative scenarios separately.

Fuel Running Cost Is Not Total Ownership Cost
This tool answers a narrow question: how do two vehicles' fuel expenses compare over the same distance? It deliberately excludes acquisition and ownership assumptions that cannot be inferred reliably from fuel efficiency.
Add purchase price, loan interest, depreciation, registration, insurance, servicing, repairs, tyres, tolls, parking, and downtime separately when making a buying or fleet decision. An apparently efficient vehicle may not have the lowest total cost of ownership, while a higher purchase price cannot be justified by fuel saving alone without calculating the payback period from verified costs.

Use this page to compare any two vehicles' fuel running cost. For a single journey, use the trip petrol calculator. For one car's expense, use the car petrol calculator. A petrol-versus-diesel, petrol-versus-CNG, or petrol-versus-electric comparison has distinct fuel-type assumptions and should use a dedicated comparison rather than treating litres and electricity units as equivalent.
This separation prevents the vehicle comparison page from competing with specific fuel-type comparison pages. Its primary entities are vehicle, distance, fuel economy, fuel consumption, price per litre, litres used, cost per kilometre, running cost, and cost difference.
Limitations
Assumptions and Limitations
The estimate assumes both vehicles cover the entered distance, each efficiency value remains representative, and each price is entered per litre in the same currency. The period selector labels the scenario; it does not convert a daily distance into a monthly figure.
Results are estimates and do not predict future fuel prices or changes in traffic, routes, load, weather, vehicle condition, or driving behaviour. The tool does not convert currencies, gallons, miles, electricity, CNG mass, or diesel-specific energy values.
