How do I split petrol cost for a carpool?

Should the driver be included in the number of riders?

Include the driver when everyone contributes equally. If passengers alone reimburse the driver, enter only the paying passengers. Agree on the arrangement before using the equal-share result.

Does the split include a return journey?

Select return trip when the entered distance covers one direction and everyone travels back over the same distance. If your distance already includes both directions, keep the trip type set to one way.

Does the calculator split tolls and parking?

No. It divides petrol or gasoline expense only. Add tolls, parking, ferry fees, and other shared costs separately before deciding the final contribution.

Can extra passengers increase petrol consumption?

Yes. Passenger and luggage weight can reduce real fuel efficiency, especially in a small car, on hills, or in stop-and-go traffic. Use mileage observed under a similar load when possible.

How the Carpool Petrol Calculator Works

Fuel required equals total distance divided by mileage. Petrol cost equals fuel required multiplied by fuel price. Equal share equals total petrol cost divided by paying riders. For a return journey, total distance equals the entered one-way distance multiplied by two.

Cost = (Distance ÷ Mileage) × Price

For example, suppose the route is 40 km one way, the trip is a return journey, the car averages 10 km/L, and four paying riders including the driver share the cost. The total distance is 80 km and the car requires 8 litres. Multiply 8 by your local petrol price to get the total, then divide by 4 for each share.

Who should pay a carpool fuel share?

An equal split is simple when everyone travels the complete route. Include every person who has agreed to pay, including the driver if the driver contributes. If only passengers reimburse the driver, enter the number of paying passengers instead.

For pickups at different points, an equal split may not reflect distance travelled. Calculate route segments separately or agree on weighted contributions. This calculator intentionally avoids deciding a social arrangement on your behalf.

Passenger load, traffic, and real mileage

Additional passengers and luggage increase vehicle weight and can lower fuel efficiency. Hills, congestion, idling, harsh acceleration, air conditioning, tyre pressure, roof racks, and detours can also change consumption.

For the strongest estimate, use mileage measured over several refills with a similar passenger load and route. Manufacturer figures or an unloaded highway average may understate petrol used by a full car in city traffic.

Understanding the units

One mile equals 1.609344 kilometres. One US gallon equals 3.785411784 litres, while one Imperial gallon equals 4.54609 litres. Currency labels the price and results; the tool does not perform exchange-rate conversion.
