How to Use the Carpool Split Calculator
- Select the car or other vehicle used for the shared ride.
- Enter the one-way route distance and select kilometres or miles.
- Enter real fuel efficiency and choose km/L, L/100 km, US MPG, or Imperial MPG.
- Enter the petrol price with the matching litre or gallon unit and currency.
- Select one way or return and enter the number of people paying an equal share.
- Review fuel required, total petrol cost, cost per distance unit, and cost per rider.
Decide whether the driver contributes before entering the rider count. The calculation happens in your browser and no journey data is submitted.
The math
Carpool Petrol Cost Formula
Fuel required = total distance / fuel efficiency
Petrol cost = fuel required x fuel price
Equal share = total petrol cost / paying riders
Cost per km or mile = petrol cost / total distance
For a return journey, total distance equals the entered one-way distance multiplied by two. For L/100 km, litres required equals distance in kilometres multiplied by consumption, then divided by 100. Full precision is retained until results are displayed.
Example
Worked Carpool Cost-Splitting Example
Inputs: 40 km one way, return trip, 10 km/L, PKR 280/L, and four paying riders including the driver.
Total distance = 40 x 2 = 80 km
Fuel required = 80 / 10 = 8 litres
Total petrol cost = 8 x 280 = PKR 2,240
Cost per kilometre = 2,240 / 80 = PKR 28/km
Equal share = 2,240 / 4 = PKR 560 each
The equal share covers petrol only. Tolls, parking, vehicle wear, and other expenses require a separate agreement.
Fair sharing
Who Should Pay a Carpool Fuel Share?
An equal split is simple when everyone travels the complete route. Include every person who has agreed to pay, including the driver if the driver contributes. If only passengers reimburse the driver, enter the number of paying passengers instead.
For pickups at different points, an equal split may not reflect distance travelled. Calculate route segments separately or agree on weighted contributions. This calculator intentionally avoids deciding a social arrangement on your behalf.
Real-world inputs
Passenger Load, Traffic, and Real Mileage
Additional passengers and luggage increase vehicle weight and can lower fuel efficiency. Hills, congestion, idling, harsh acceleration, air conditioning, tyre pressure, roof racks, and detours can also change consumption.
For the strongest estimate, use mileage measured over several refills with a similar passenger load and route. Manufacturer figures or an unloaded highway average may understate petrol used by a full car in city traffic.
Understanding the units
One mile equals 1.609344 kilometres. One US gallon equals 3.785411784 litres, while one Imperial gallon equals 4.54609 litres. Currency labels the price and results; the tool does not perform exchange-rate conversion.
Scope
Limitations and Search-Intent Boundaries
This calculator assumes distance, mileage, fuel price, trip type, and number of paying riders are accurate and constant. It estimates petrol expense only; it excludes tolls, parking, maintenance, tyres, insurance, depreciation, and driver time.
Use the Trip Petrol Calculator when your main goal is journey planning rather than dividing a shared bill. This page focuses specifically on an equal carpool petrol split, preventing overlap with general trip, daily commute, and monthly budget tools.
