How to Use the Trip Petrol Calculator

  1. Choose the vehicle type used for the journey.
  2. Enter the one-way route distance and choose kilometres or miles.
  3. Enter observed fuel efficiency in km/L, L/100 km, US MPG, or Imperial MPG.
  4. Enter the petrol price, select its litre or gallon unit, and choose a currency.
  5. Select one way or return trip and enter the number of people sharing the fuel cost.
  6. Review total distance, fuel required, journey cost, cost per distance unit, and passenger share.

Use the full combined distance when the route back differs from the outward route. The calculation runs in your browser, requires no account, and uses the fuel price you enter rather than a live price feed.

The math

Trip Petrol Cost Formula

Fuel required = total distance ÷ fuel efficiency

Total petrol cost = fuel required × petrol price

Cost per km or mile = total cost ÷ total distance

Return distance = one-way distance × 2

Cost per passenger = total cost ÷ people sharing

Combined distance = journey distance × number of trips

For L/100 km, fuel required in litres equals distance in kilometres × consumption ÷ 100. For MPG, fuel required equals distance in miles ÷ MPG, using the correct US or Imperial gallon. The calculator retains full precision internally and rounds displayed values for readability.

Example

Worked Return-Trip Petrol Cost Example

Inputs: 100 km one way, return trip, 12.5 km/L, PKR 280 per litre, four people sharing.

Total distance = 100 × 2 = 200 km

Fuel required = 200 ÷ 12.5 = 16 litres

Total petrol cost = 16 × 280 = PKR 4,480

Cost per kilometre = 4,480 ÷ 200 = PKR 22.40/km

Cost per passenger = 4,480 ÷ 4 = PKR 1,120

This is a fuel-cost estimate. It does not include tolls, parking, maintenance, or other travel expenses, and actual consumption may vary.

Route planning

One-Way, Return, and Multi-Stop Journeys

A one-way trip ends at the destination, while a return trip includes the outward journey and travel back. Select return only when the entered distance covers one direction. The calculator doubles that value before estimating fuel and cost.

For a circular route, several stops, a detour, or a different road home, add every route leg and enter the complete distance as a one-way calculation. Include local driving at the destination and the distance to planned fuel stops when they materially change the route.

For repeated identical journeys, multiply one complete journey distance by the number of trips. Calculate routes separately when city traffic, towing, payload, or road conditions produce meaningfully different mileage.

Units

Understanding Mileage and Fuel-Volume Units

Kilometres per Litre vs Litres per 100 km

Higher km/L means better fuel efficiency, while lower L/100 km means better efficiency. They express the same consumption in opposite ways: L/100 km = 100 ÷ km/L and km/L = 100 ÷ L/100 km. For example, 12.5 km/L equals 8 L/100 km.

US MPG vs Imperial MPG

A US gallon contains 3.785411784 litres; an Imperial gallon contains 4.54609 litres. Imperial MPG is therefore numerically higher for the same vehicle efficiency. Select the exact MPG type and petrol-price unit rather than treating “gallon” as an interchangeable measure.

Kilometres, Miles, Litres, and Gallons

One mile equals 1.609344 kilometres. The calculator converts distance and fuel volume when the selected inputs use different systems. Currency is only a label for the entered price and calculated result; no exchange-rate conversion takes place.

What Changes a Journey's Petrol Cost?

Route and traffic

Stop-and-go traffic, idling, detours, steep gradients, rough roads, and strong wind can increase fuel consumption.

Vehicle and load

Engine condition, tyre pressure, air conditioning, passengers, cargo, roof racks, trailers, and towing can affect real mileage.

Driving behaviour

High speed, harsh acceleration, heavy braking, and prolonged idling can make the same journey use more petrol.

Inputs and prices

Outdated route distance, advertised mileage, or a mismatched litre or gallon price can make the estimate less representative.

Use mileage measured over several refills under similar operating conditions. If your journey includes both dense city traffic and steady highway driving, a blended observed mileage value is usually more useful than a single advertised figure.

Sharing

Splitting Trip Petrol Cost Between Passengers

Enter the number of people sharing the petrol expense to divide the total equally. The result is a planning figure for fuel only. Decide separately whether the driver is included and how tolls, parking, ferries, or other charges will be shared.

Extra passengers and luggage add load and may change actual fuel efficiency. For a heavily loaded trip, use mileage observed under a similar load instead of assuming the vehicle will return its usual unloaded figure.

Calculator Limitations and Assumptions

The estimate assumes the entered route distance, trip type, mileage, petrol price, price unit, and currency are correct and remain constant. It also assumes fuel efficiency is representative across the whole journey and that no fuel is lost through a leak.

The result does not automatically adjust for traffic delays, long idling, hills, wind, weather, detours, road closures, passenger weight, cargo, towing, engine condition, tyre pressure, air-conditioning use, fuel quality, odometer error, or price changes between fuel stops. Results are estimates, not exact journey bills.
